We have included responses to our most frequently asked questions below, but if we have missed anything you would like to ask please contact us at judy.rumbelow@gmail.com
The nursery is open during the growing season from mid March until the end of August. For detailed days and times please go to the Visit Us section. If you cannot make any of the times when we are open we are happy to open by appointment at a time or day that suits you. Please don’t feel reluctant - lots of our customers do this, especially when they have visitors who they want to bring, or perhaps just have a busy schedule. We are always pleased to see you.
We have ample parking and a toilet for our customers. Although we don’t supply boxes for plants we are always happy to help load your car.
We accept cash or cards (except American Express). If you would like a delivery we can also take pre-payment by BACS transfer.
If your dog is with you when you visit the nursery and it is hot, it is fine to get them out of the car on a lead. Unfortunately we cannot allow dogs to be walked round the farm or the garden. We also do not allow dogs on NGS days.
Parking on garden open days is in one of our fields around 250 yards from the garden. The garden is on a slope with several steep steps. If you are able to walk to the garden, we have several seating areas with beautiful views for less mobile visitors. The wildflower meadow is on a slope with uneven ground but can be viewed easily without entering it. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will do our best to help.
You can park your car right next to the plant tables. The nursery area is on a slight slope on a gravelled yard. If you are in any doubt please do not hesitate to get in touch before your visit and we will do our best to meet your needs.
We are a small nursery and we grow everything we sell on site. No plants are bought in. Our plants are seasonal, so the varieties and size of plants on offer will depend on when you visit. We usually have between 50 and 100 different varieties of plants for sale at any one time. If you are looking for something specific please ask as we may well have it under propagation.
We wash and re-use all our plastic pots, and also take old pots from customers to re-use. We re-use plastic plant labels and seed trays several times. We create compost for our garden beds from any plants that we do not sell. We are a truly local business and we do not buy in any plants at all which means no lorries to deliver, no plants wrapped in plastic film and no risk of importing foreign diseases. We are not peat free. We have tried peat free compost but have found our plants do not survive dry summers in this compost which makes more waste if we have to throw them away. However our compost is low peat and bought from a local supplier.
We are always happy to give practical advice to customers. Many of our customers will bring a photo of an area they wish to plant up and we can suggest appropriate plants. We also offer a collection of plants specifically for beginners.
Our garden and the wildflower meadow are open on certain days between May and the end of July through the National Garden Scheme. You can find dates, times and prices here on the NGS website.
On days that the garden is open we offer homemade refreshments and our full stock of plants is available to purchase. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on our garden open days.
When the garden is open we can only allow parking in our field which is about 250 yards from the garden entrance so this might be a challenge for people with limited mobility. The garden is on a sloping site. That said, if you can walk from the car park we have lots of seating with beautiful views of the Preselis.
As a lot of our visitors are from Pembrokeshire they are well used to rain and just carry on! We do have a large log cabin where we serve teas if it is wet - it also has wonderful views of the Preselis so you can look at the rain in comfort!
We often welcome clubs to visit the nursery and the garden. If you would like to visit the garden and the nursery (with or without refreshments) you can do so ‘by arrangement’ through the National Garden Scheme. Please contact us direct at Cold Comfort Plants to make arrangements. If your garden club would like just to visit the nursery you would be very welcome. You can come during our normal opening times or book a special visit to suit you. In each case please contact Cold Comfort Plants to discuss arrangements (click here for all our contact details)
